I Won’t Buy You Flowers - by Becky

If tomorrow you announce, you’re expecting again,
I promise this time around I’ll be a better friend.
I’d offer to hold the baby but won’t ever ask,
Give me your list, I’ll do every task.
I’d send you voice notes, bring you gossip, spill all the tea.
l’d watch the baby while you go for a rare solo wee.
l’d pop in for a visit, not stay for hours and hours,
And I promise to absolutely never buy you flowers.
I’d restock your shampoo, brush and braid your hair,
I’d hug you not the baby, to show you I care.
I’d clear out the fridge and empty the bins,
Remind you of even the smallest of wins.
I’d sort all the admin for our friend’s joint birthday gift,
I’d tell you stories from the outside world so you don’t feel adrift.
Baby outfits are great, but more importantly,
l’d bring you post partum pads, an ice pack or three.
I’d chaperone other guests, keep their visits short and sweet,
I’d wash dishes, bring you dinner, give you chance to eat.
I’d send messages checking in, no pressure to reply,
I’d tell you you’re doing great but it’s okay to cry.
I’d book annual leave, so mid-week doesn’t drag,
Replenish the nappies, refill the travel bag.
To the friends who went before me, I’m sorry I wasn’t there,
In a way that was meaningful, but I promise I did care.
I just didn’t understand, how to help the new you,
But don’t worry next time, I know exactly what to do.
So if tomorrow you announce, you’re expecting again,
I promise this time around, I’ll be a better friend.
